Ex-boxer, 73, holds off eight hooded thieves in shop raid

Former boxer Tony McGregor, aged 73, fought off eight hooded thieves when they tried to raid a cycle store. Mr McGregor grappled with the gang and forced them out – pushing one off his getaway bike to make sure the group left empty-handed.

The pensioner from Coventry said: 'The adrenaline kicked in and my boxing skills came flooding back. I was a keen fighter back in the day but then women and drink got in the way. It's been years since I did any boxing but I was always the underdog so thought nothing of facing eight people.'

The Dublin-born former factory worker even scaled a 20ft fence in his pursuit of the raiders. A passer-by in a van also joined in the pursuit of the thieves, using his van to block their getaway.

Shop co-owner Darren Atkins said: 'They failed to nick anything, so this wasn't a victory for them.' Shockingly, the raid took place in the afternoon while the shop was full of customers.
