"This is about giving kids and their families the opportunity to make the right decision." But critics of the treatment say 11-year-olds are not old enough to make life-altering decisions about changing their gender, and parents should not be encouraging them.
"This is child abuse. It's like performing liposuction on an anorexic child," said Dr Paul McHugh, professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University. "It is a disorder of the mind. Not a disorder of the body. Dealing with it in this way is not dealing with the problem that truly exists. We shouldn't be mucking around with nature. We can't assume what the outcome will be," Professor McHugh said.
Tommy's parents, Pauline Moreno and Debra Lobel, said they support their child and feel this is the best way for him to find an answer to a question he has been asking all his life. They say Tommy - whom they now call Tammy - began taking GnRH inhibitors over the summer to give him more time to explore the female gender identity with which he associates

Based on the pic, it looks like Tommy/Tammy knows where he lies in the gender spectrum.
I think he should be older before making this decision. I realize that the moms want to help their son, but they need to back off until he's an adult.
hmmmm.... i think with cases such as this onepeople get so booged down in there ideology that they loose a cool head. I dont think it a coincidence that a male child inside a lesbian couples relationship would wish to become a girl also,perhaps showing this is more down to a envirmental factor rather then heredity.
Dr Mchughs is perhaps closer to the truth then some might like to even contemplate but with gender and sexuality becoming one of the last mindless taboos of post-modernism we don't even wish to rationalise that thought.
I understand those who say an 11-yr-old is too young to make a life-changing decision, but the fact is that if the kid does nothing, her life WILL change on its own. The child has not been prescribed hormones or gender reassignment, but blockers to allow her to take more time to be sure of her gender before intervening or letting nature do its thing.

I don't see the point in the blockers. The hormones that cause the body to mature are the same ones that 'ripen' the mind.
And...wow, some of you people are horrible. Calm down.
I have no problem with the child being given the blockers. All they do is prevent male characteristics from manifesting. If, upon adulthood, she does decide she's a male, all she has to do is stop taking the blockers.
However, I DO have a problem with the fact that this is being publicized. The child's privacy should be protected and I have to question the motivations and agenda of any parent that trots their child into the limelight like this.
this circus show that is going on here is all because of these gay women. Yes I'm blaming all this on these lesbians and there lifestyle. It has corrupted this liitle boy mind since he was a baby. How in the world does a person who haven't even started to enter puberty feel this way. The internet sites I'm reading are not mentioning it but did y'all know the little boy also threated to cut off his gentials. And to enourage that even though you are a little boy that obviously is going to turn out to be extremely gay its okay because you're being just like us. A big family of homos. Then to turn around and give a young child hormone pills is not something that's okay or normal. All the blame or some of it was because of these very gay women. And them explosing him to the open gayness of there likestyle at such a early age.
