Nine-week-old Mo – short for Moses – was plucked from inside a pink basket that was filling up with water in the Leeds Liverpool Canal, in Bramley, Leeds.
She was spotted by two 11-year-old boys who rescued the kitten and took her home before contacting the RSPCA. Mo is now being cared for at the RSPCA Craven and Upper Wharfedale branch because centres across Leeds were full to capacity.
RSPCA inspector Dave Holgate said: “If it hadn’t been for the quick-thinking of these two young boys this kitten would certainly have drowned. Whoever did this condemned this kitten to death.”

Typical press bullshit. In fact, whoever did that, clearly did not condemn the kitten to death.
That's assuming anybody did actually chuck the kitten in. The kitten might well have clambered aboard an abandoned container on the edge of the canal out of normal kitten curiousity.
Had the basket?(more like a bucket, they're sold under the name "Gorilla Tubs"), had the basket sunk, the kitten would have swum, even a nine-week old kitten, most of the canal, in that area has shallow, unwalled bank on one side.
Last bit of over excitable reporter nonsense: 'eagle-eyed' just how impressed are we supposed to be that two schoolboys noticed a bright pink container floating on a canal?
The area of the canal around bramley is quite busy, with walkers, cyclists, joggers, fishermen, etc, it's a popular commuting path too, there's little likelihood it would not have been seen.
Disclaimer: I live fairly nearby. I am immune to the charm of cats, but no, I didn't chuck the kitten in.
