Slough council gully cleaners thought they might have found the bottom of a rainbow on Monday morning when they lifted a gully lid to find a pot of gold. Gullies, the drains at the edges of the roads, are cleaned by the specialist crew throughout the year, but in Cranbourne Road, off Cippenham Lane there was more than just leaves and dirt in the hole.
The find – including gold necklaces, watches, rings and earrings – has now been handed to police who are looking into whether the items are linked to any local incidents. John Knight, one of the gully cleaning crew, said: “We lifted the lid on the gully and right inside there was a plastic pot with gold jewellery spilling out of it. And there was more in the bottom of the gully.
“There were rings, earrings, necklaces and watches and, though I am no expert, some of it looked like it contained precious stones as well. It was a bit of a surprise! I’ve been on the tanker about eight or nine years and this is the first time I have found gold jewellery.”
He added: “I think some thief probably stole it from somewhere nearby and stashed it down there so he could come back and pick it up later. He wasn’t quick enough though, because we got there first and now the police have it all. Hopefully the police can trace who owns it and return it to them.”
