A British man has been caught trying to smuggle a two-kilo haul of cocaine out of Brazil — in his stomach. The 44-year-old was arrested at Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo as he attempted to catch a flight to Senegal, in West Africa.
X-rays of the man's belly showed 89 capsules of the class A drug — each weighing just under an ounce. The man, whose name has not been released, was held as he tried to check-in when cops noticed irregularities on his passport.
Police Chief Jose Alonso said the man held a British and Nigerian passport and information on the two did not match. The enormous stash of cocaine was removed from his stomach and intestines hours later in hospital after he was arrested last Thursday.
Police said the haul was worth £286,000 and was destined for sale in Europe. The man could now face up to 15 years in prison for drug smuggling.
