When you’re digging the garden, you might expect to come across the odd weed and some rubble – but not Homer Simpson. That’s what happened when Rosalind and Donald McIntyre, 50, decided to clear their back yard in Cupar, Fife.
But this version of the doughnut-munching superstar is made of stone, about 800 years older – and makes the real Homer almost look handsome. Experts at the National Committee for Carved Stones of Scotland admit they were “completely baffled” by the find.
Rosalind, 46, believes it could be a gargoyle from a former church built in the 13th century. She added: “We have had a lot of people saying it looks like Homer – it is the shape of his head. We found it in June in the garden. I picked up a stone and Donald said it had a face. It was covered in moss and we thought it looked a bit like a monkey.”
Rosalind said the bug-eyed sculpture is heavy and full of detail. She added: “If you put your finger into his mouth, you can feel all the ridges and his teeth. There is no word to describe it other than ugly but we have become quite attached to it. We just really want to know where he is from.”
