DAFTAS Weird News Awards for 2011 announced

Fenton the deer-chasing dog, Charlie Sheen and a woman who claimed to have an alien in her fridge have all won awards celebrating the best weird news stories of 2011. Labrador Fenton shot to internet fame after he was filmed chasing a herd of deer through Richmond Park in London, followed by his shouting owner. And after being viewed by more than 4 million people, the pooch has also scooped a DAFTAS award for the oddest animal tale of the year.

The award for Personality of 2011 went to Charlie Sheen who had a very public meltdown fighting publicly with bosses of TV show Two and a Half Men and introducing us to terms like "Winning!" and "Tigers Blood!" Taking the gong for Crazy Crime was Richard Handl, a Swedish man caught trying to split atoms at home and Natsumi Hayashi won the Off-Beat Art award for her series of levitation self-portraits. Winning the Weird Science category was the team of 'astronauts' who emerged from a container in a Russian car park having simulated a mission to Mars, while a Russian woman who claimed to have ET in her fridge won the Unexplained award.

DAFTAS awards organiser Simon Crisp said: "For many people 2011 will go down as the year Bin Laden was killed, dictators fell and looting hit UK streets. But for others it will always be the year a Labrador chased deer in Richmond Park launching the phrase "Jesus Christ Fenton!" "We wanted to celebrate the lighter side of news, the sort of stories which make people smile and give them something more cheery than the world's financial meltdown to talk about at the pub."

Other DAFTAS winners included the T Mobile Royal Wedding video (PR Stunt) Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos dropping the Spanish cup under a bus (Sport) and the launch of BabyGaga breast-milk ice-cream (Funny Product). The team behind the TV show MythBusters won an award after accidentally firing a cannonball into a home, as did the helicopter pilot who escaped a horror crash on live TV and Chanel Tapper for her 9.75cm long tongue. A special award, the 'because it didn't fit in any other award category award' was given to the building which in 2011 gained the name 'Hitler House'.
