Two police officers hospitalised after man throws puppy at them

SWAT officers on Friday ended a two-hour standoff by arresting a man who allegedly threw his puppy at two San Diego police officers and attacked them outside his Pacific Beach home, injuring both. The injured officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. One officer suffered a broken nose, while his female partner had a mild concussion, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

The officers responded to a disturbance call at 10:44 p.m. Thursday about a tenant playing loud music at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Ingraham Street, Stafford said. When the officers arrived, Tyler Torres, 31, opened his front door and threw his small puppy at them, he said, adding that he also physically attacked them, punching them in the head and face before running back inside.



Torres also told the officers he had a gun, and he threatened to shoot them, Stafford said. The SWAT team was called and took Torres into custody about 12:30 a.m. after a two-hour standoff, he said. Some residents living nearby were evacuated during the standoff. At the same time, officers fired non-lethal pepper-ball rounds at the balcony while Torres swore at them repeatedly, police said.

Torres was booked into San Diego Central jail on suspicion of assault likely to produce great bodily injury and resisting arrest using violence. His bail was set at $30,000 and he was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the downtown San Diego County courthouse, according to the Sheriff's Department's website. The puppy, reportedly a Rottweiler, was not injured, police said.
