Australian bus driver suspended for texting as he drove along motorway

A Sydney bus driver has been caught on video taking his hands off the wheel several times as he toys with his mobile phone along a major motorway. At one point he accelerates from a standing start without even lifting his eyes.

The footage was taken by a passenger aboard the 610 service along the M2 between Sydney's CBD and the Hills District one week before Christmas. Dayne Hudson said his friend shot the scenes on his mobile phone because "he couldn't believe what he was seeing".

Throughout the two-minute recording the driver is only watching the road for about 30 seconds. He takes both hands off the wheel seven times in those two minutes — scrolling, pressing buttons and flipping the phone on its side for a better view.

"The reason my mate wants the footage out there is because he said he couldn't live with himself if there was an awful crash and people were killed," Hudson said. A spokeswoman for NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the man's bus driver's licence had been suspended while an investigation was underway.

Wonder if these are union drivers. Back here in Ottawa, if you take a video, the union start complaining about privacy laws....
