This is the moment a desperate Melbourne mother put her life on the line to save her baby son from being hit by a suburban train. As she was distracted for just a second, the dramatic CCTV footage shows a pram containing the five-month-old roll away from her towards the edge of the platform. One commuter busy fiddling with his mobile phone absent-mindedly steps around the wayward pram as it continues its journey to the platform edge.
Horrified travellers watch helplessly as the baby lands face down after tumbling 1.5m to the track. Without hesitation, the child's distraught mother leaps onto the train tracks to rescue her helpless charge. The disturbing video prompted a warning from train operator Metro and the Transport Department for parents to keep a firm grip on babies and children at railway stations.

The peak-hour incident at Fairfield station on September 27 last year was the third involving a baby in a pram in two years. The mother of the child involved in the Fairfield incident told paramedics the pram somehow rolled away from her, spilling her son on to the tracks. Paramedic Simon Della-Rossa said they found the boy being cared for by his parents when they arrived. "The woman jumped down to her son, who was crying, and lifted the pram and boy back to the platform," he said.
The boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries, including a lump and bruising on his face. Train operator Metro urged mothers with prams to be vigilant around trains. "These sorts of incidents are a reminder to anyone standing on a train station platform with a pram," Metro spokesman Daniel Hoare said. "Always apply the brake, don't let go of the pram and especially never, ever look away from the pram."
