Bus driver jailed after deliberately swerving to mow down cyclist

This is the moment a road rage bus driver used his vehicle as a weapon to knock over a cyclist in Bristol city centre. Gavin Hill got into a heated exchange with rider Phillip Mead after cutting in front of him onto St James Barton roundabout.



After an altercation in which the cyclist parked his bike against the front of the bus and tugged at one of its windscreen wipers, Hill pulled out to overtake the bike before lurching sharp left, knocking Mr Mead into the road.

Mr Mead, 43, suffered fractures to his left wrist and leg, which needed to be plated, and to his thumb in the incident, which happened in front of Bristol Magistrates Court in Marlborough Street in April of last year. Hill, 29, of Slipps Close, Frome, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm.

He sobbed as he was jailed for 17 months at Bristol Crown Court by a judge who said: “This was not an accident, it was an assault.” Hill, who was fired after the incident, was also disqualified from driving for two-and-a-half years and ordered to pass an extended driving test before getting behind the wheel again.
