Father accused of shooting son after country music karaoke session turns ugly

"I can't believe he shot me." That's what a Shingletown man reportedly said while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive after his father allegedly shot him after growing irked at his country music karaoke singing. William Henry Oller Sr., 70, was arraigned in Shasta County Superior Court on attempted murder and other charges in connection with the shooting of William Carr Oller Jr., 50.

Oller's appointed deputy public defender entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf, and Oller is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Feb. 14. Oller's bail was raised from $500,000 to $750,000. He remains in Shasta County jail. According to a Shasta County sheriff's summary of events, the junior Oller told investigators the shooting erupted after he and his father argued over his playing of karaoke music. The report did not specify what song might have ignited the argument and sheriff's detectives have said they don't know.

At

one point, the sheriff's report said, the elder Oller, who lives in the Sacramento area and was visiting his son's home, left the Sites Road residence and made a statement to the effect of "I'm going to shut you up." He then went to his pickup, grabbed a semi-automatic pistol and pointed it at his approaching son who had gone outside to talk to him. The younger Oller retreated back into the residence and locked his door but later opened it after he believed his father had left the front porch.

Upon opening the door, however, he was confronted by his father, who again pointed the handgun at him. That triggered a fight, and the son was shot multiple times. He suffered wounds to his arm, shoulder and chest, John Kucera, the younger Oller's attorney, has said. He said Oller Jr. also suffered a head wound. The senior Oller suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the struggle.
