Swiss man installs wood-burning stove in his Volvo

Europe is being hit by severe cold weather that started two weeks ago, and the Continent’s deep freeze expected to continue until mid-February.

This hasn’t stopped one enterprising man in Switzerland from venturing outside in his slightly modified Volvo.

Since traditional car heaters are proving ineffective in the bitter cold, Pascal Prokop has built a wood-burning stove in his car. He obtained an operating permit for his stove-car from the Swiss Technical Inspection Authority, making it perfectly legal to operate.

Mr Prokop lives in the town of Mettmenstetten, 25 km south of Zurich. Apparently the Swiss Technical Inspection Authority had no problem with a car that has a fireplace instead of a passenger seat.

As a joke I preferred the one on Top Gear. As a way of heating a car I don't see the point.

If you live in a cold climate it's nice to have an auxiliary electric heater that can be turned on remotely, or even remote start. You want the car to be warm when you get to it in the morning, you don't want to be out in the cold building a fire.
