Man accused of sitting on his cockatoo

A Key West man is facing animal cruelty charges after police say he ripped out several feathers and tried to sit on his pet cockatoo. Douglas Kutney, 67, was arrested on the felony charge on Saturday for the bizarre bird attack in front of about 20 onlookers near Mallory Square.

According to a Key West Police report, an intoxicated Kutney was "striking the bird, ripping out its feathers, flipping the bird and squeezing it and attempting to sit on the bird."

It was unknown why Kutney was abusing the bird, which was taken to the Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for rehabilitation. When Kutney was placed into handcuffed and police began to search him, he apparently had a wardrobe malfunction.

"As I pinned Kutney to the side of the van, his shorts fell down to his ankles," the report said. "Kutney was not wearing any underwear at that time." Kutney is being held without bond according to Monroe County Sheriff's Office jail records.
