Motorist filmed driving with car bonnet up

A motorist in Australia has captured shocking video of a fellow highway user who continued to drive at high speed despite having his bonnet lid lifted. The dangerous driver was filmed during Wednesday morning peak-hour on the Teddy Whitten Bridge, part of Melbourne's Western Ring Road.

Footage of the incident shows a Holden Barina hatchback straddling the shoulder while travelling at speeds of up to 70km/h with no view forward through the dashboard. The vehicle reportedly drove a significant distance along the highway before leaving at the Sunshine Road exit.

A lone male driver was behind the wheel at the time, a witness said. It is unclear whether the bonnet flipped up while the man was driving or whether he commenced with the bonnet lifted. The driver may have jump-started the car, which reportedly still had the jumpstart kit unsecured on top of the exposed engine.

The footage has angered road safety officials who say six people died on Victorian roads last weekend. "We're shocked, we're horrified, we're disturbed, we're working with our road safety partners but how can anybody think that that's acceptable?" Transport Accident Commision chief executive Janet Dore said.
