Handbag and shoes stolen from woman as she lay dead in road after hit and run

A man has been arrested by police after a handbag and shoes belonging to a 62-year-old woman killed in a hit and run were taken from the scene as she lay dead in the road. Sarwari Ashraf died when she was struck on Upper Brook Street in Longsight, Manchester, last week. Her black handbag and shoes disappeared from the scene and detectives were hoping whoever took them had been planning to hand them into a police station.



However, police later said they believed they had been stolen. They issued CCTV footage of a man they wanted to speak to about the missing bag and shoes. The man was seen bending down and picking up Sarwari’s shoes and handbag from the road.

Detectives said they had arrested a 46-year-old on suspicion of theft. He remains in police custody. Sarwari was crossing the road near the road near the junction with Hathersage Avenue at 8.50am on Thursday when she was struck by a vehicle. Officers confirmed the incident is being investigated as a ‘fail-to-stop’ crash.

A 40-year-old lorry driver who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving has been released on police bail until May pending further inquiries. Attempts to identify the woman who died were hampered when it emerged that the handbag had been removed from the scene of the hit and run. It contained house keys, personal papers, her disabled badge, cash card and mobile phone.
