In 1967 someone threw away a bag of smokey bacon-flavoured crisps. Four decades later, that Golden Wonder crisp packet has been picked up during a beach clean in the West country.

Neil Phillips, from Goodleigh, North Devon, was taking part in the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project at Saunton with his son Finn, 6, and a neighbour's son. He said: "We found the packet of crisps just where the beach joins the sand dunes."
The packet had details of a gift offer with a closing date of September 30, 1967. Nearby was another packet from 1968. Neil said: "The boys were both shocked when I explained that the empty packets were even older than me. Both packets appeared to be in excellent condition, with just a little fading of the lettering.

"They would clearly have remained littering the dunes for many more years," said Neil. "Surfers Against Sewage told us many plastics will take more than a thousand years to biodegrade." Neil said he'd considered posting the crisp packet back to Golden Wonder, but the children were keen to hang on to the keepsakes.
