Rescuers free Chinese toddler trapped in pavement

Rescuers in south west China have taken on a challenge which has tested their equipment to its limits - freeing the leg of a two-year old boy trapped in a gap in a drainage canal in the pavement.

The toddler was apparently playing in the street when he slipped and his foot got lodged in the grate.

Police quickly arrived and chiselled away at the corners of the concrete block to try and lever it out - but quickly gave up. A small hydraulic ram was bought in to crack open the grate - but that too failed.

Finally, firefighters arrived with a full-scale jaws of life, and even these struggled, simply chipping away the surface of the plate. Eventually, though, rescuers did manage to chip away a hole large enough for the boys leg to be freed, much to the relief of his mother.
