Couple's love declared with giant slurry notice

Forget saying it with flowers, spraying it with slurry spreads the message much more widely and has got a whole village talking. Residents of Cunningsburgh in the Shetland isles woke up on Monday to see the field at Tow bearing the names of lovebirds Iain and Fiona, written in the brown stuff.

The couple, Iain Currie from Orkney and Cunningsburgh girl Fiona Halcrow, are due to marry in three weeks and their names appeared in a field owned by Fiona’s parents. The prank had been the idea of Fiona’s uncle David Adamson, and carried out early in the morning by her brother Jamie, 25.

The 50ft letters showed up clearly against the green grass and could easily be seen from the road. Fiona, 22, who will be starting an accountancy job in Aberdeen in August, said of the artwork: “It’s pretty embarrassing. I can’t believe my brother did it.I suppose it’s nice , it’s quite funny.”

Iain, a graphic designer, saw it before he went home to Aberdeen on Monday and thought it was funny as well, she said. The couple will marry at Lerwick Baptist Church on 28th July. Of the slurry-spreading, Fiona’s mother Sheila said: “David had two fields left to do and had the idea. Jamie picked up on it and went out really early to do it.” The slurry message was a one-day wonder, however, and had almost disappeared by the next day.
