I have a Java problem with my computer

Yesterday I was prompted to update Java, which I duly did. This resulted in Java disappearing completely, meaning many websites won't open or just crash my browser.

I reinstalled both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions and although it shows up in the control panel as being there, when I test if it's installed I'm told it isn't.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, system restored, checked for viruses etc. etc., but whatever I try it won't work. I don't know what to do now. Anyway, I'll keep trying.

In the meantime, here's a man dressed as a nun playing a motorised piano.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

a) Why do you need Java? So few websites use it.

b) Check the Java browser plug-in is installed (not just the runtime). If you use Firefox, visit this page to check your plug-ins are up-to-date: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Heh heh, I tried that thanks Brixter. :)

@ Anonymous, I have no idea why I need Java, all I know is that without it working many websites, mainly news websites, just won't open. They begin to open, then hang.

The BBC, Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Sun, Mirror, Daily Mail, Sky, Reuters ...

And that's just UK sites.

But hey, at least I can still watch videos on YouTube and LiveLeak.

Are you sure it's plugged in?

(Sorry, I can't resist. hahaha)

My Java has been disabled for years, and I have no problem with those websites. Better read this:

I agree with Miss C. Yesterday I intentionally disabled Java on my system (Mac/Firefox) after reading this article:

Thanks for the links Miss C and Stan!

I disabled Java on my old, fundamentally broken, laptop and again the same sites wouldn't open. When I turned it on again they did.

Anyway, I've managed to download an older version of Java and most sites work again, although some need to be refreshed several times before opening.

I don't understand these things! :)

Older versions of Java are really vulnerable at this point, so I'd recommend getting the update! When problematic, I try the uninstall route first, download the full (offline) versions and try the reinstall again. There's version 6 and 7, both updated, maybe uninstall and opt for the other version? I ran into such a version conflict problem once and ran the Auslogics registry cleaner to fix it, but that can create it's own issues so that's just an FYI, use with caution if you go that route!

Thanks for that Rikedoid!

For some reason it's version 7 that won't work.

I now have version 6 installed.

So, fingers crossed ...
