Car thieves drove three miles across city with owner in the boot

A 62-year-old man jumped into the boot of his car while it was being stolen and was driven three miles across Edinburgh. Two teenage thieves targeted the Vauxhall Astra while the man was unloading the boot in Lochend Road.

The owner jumped inside before the pair drove off at speed up Smokey Brae and along Duddingston Road West. The vehicle was involved in a number of collisions with other cars.

The man managed to call the police from the boot of his car. The thieves abandoned the car in Craigmillar Castle Avenue, near to Castlebrae High School, and ran off. The pair were described as being white and in their mid-teens.

One was wearing a black long-sleeved t-shirt, while the other was wearing a white t-shirt. A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "The youths responsible for this vehicle theft put not only their own lives in danger, but the lives of other motorists and pedestrians and we are keen to trace them as soon as possible."
