I discovered something similar by throwing lumps of ice onto a frozen pond. Was having great fun till a jobsworth park keeper came along and told me off for scaring the fish :|
I filmed the same very same sound then my lake froze over. The winter in Ireland had been brutal a few years back, frozen water pipes, icey roads etc. The fun being throwing stones on the lake next to my house.
