Wig theft crime spree leaves cancer charity scratching head

Charity shop staff are baffled following a string of thefts of blonde wigs. The hairpieces have been stolen from mannequins in a bizarre crime wave. Five wigs have been stolen from the Ayrshire Cancer Support shop in Kilmarnock in the last few months.

Each time the hairpiece has been taken, it has been replaced. Then the next one goes missing. General manager Janie Riddick said: “The last wig only lasted two hours before it had gone. It had been fixed on to the model’s head so someone was clearly determined to get their hands on it. We can’t afford to keep replacing the wigs.”



After the most recent theft, frustrated shop workers have decided to leave the mannequin, nicknamed June II, bald.  It was named because of its resemblance to store manager June Khan, who has asked staff to keep their eyes peeled for anyone wearing one of their wigs. June said: “It’s funny but also a wee bit annoying.

“The wigs have been handed in by people who have been treated for cancer and could go to someone else who is having treatment. We’ve decided to leave June II bald and won’t be letting any more wigs we get in out of our sight.” Staff reckon the wigs are getting sold on as they are professionally made and would be expensive to replace if bought new.
