Since September, a set of barriers has been in place to protect the public from the hazard. However, they are moved to the opposite side of the road at least once a week by pranksters, according to North Weald Bassett Parish Council chairman Cyril Hawkins.
He said that in the past six months, since the hole had appeared, his organisation had contacted the county council on four occasions in a bid to get the problem fixed, but to no avail. Mr Hawkins is pleading for urgent maintenance work before someone is injured. "The problem is what happens if someone falls down?
"It's definitely dangerous and there should be a priority list and this hole should be near the top of it as far as I'm concerned." A county council spokesman thanked the parish council for bringing the defect to its attention and said workers had visited the hole and were looking into it.

Your local council looking concernedly at a pothole in a picture ought to make the parish feel good about its elected officials. Maybe if they collectively cry, it will fill the hole with their concern.
