English cricket supporter hit on the head by six

A hard blow to the head was suffered by a fan who forgot the cardinal rule of cricket - always keep your eye on the ball. The spectator was watching the New Zealand versus England cricket test at University Oval in Dunedin when he was hit.

The incident occurred when New Zealand batsman Hamish Rutherford hit a six over long-on. England supporter Alex Dettman, 30, of York, was sitting on the grass bank talking to friends and appeared oblivious to the flight path of the ball.

''I blew my nose, looked up and went `Uh-oh','' Mr Dettman said. The ball hit him on left side of his head and left a bloody graze in his hairline.

Mr Dettman turned down medical attention from concerned St John ambulance staff so he could keep watching the cricket and said he enjoyed the day regardless. ''It's like England, but a lot nicer and warmer.''
