A burglar has been sent to prison after being found asleep in the garden outside the house he had just broken into.
John Stalker, 59, of Workington, Cumbria, had got into the house and stolen some apple juice, a slice of birthday cake and a packet of onion bhajis from the fridge in the kitchen.
Then he dozed off in a chair in the garden – and was still asleep when the 18-year-old who lived there came out to investigate where the food had gone from the fridge.
The birthday cake and apple juice were found beside Stalker but there was no sign of the onion bhajis. Stalker – a prolific petty criminal with 98 previous convictions to his name – pleaded guilty to a charge of burgling the house in Silloth, and was jailed for 81 days.
