Owners and 52 dogs, cats and rabbits rescued from house fire sparked by 'unattended roast'

More than fifty dogs, cats and rabbits were rescued from a house fire on Sunday afternoon.

The RSPCA have been handed the mammoth task of rehoming the 52 animals after a kitchen fire at the house in Fullerton Road, Ford, Plymouth. An elderly man and woman were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Their daughter, who also lives in the house, was uninjured.

It’s believed an unattended roast dinner in the oven caused the blaze, which broke out at about 4.30pm. Fire chiefs say that two working smoke alarms saved the lives of the family – and their dozens of pets. The animals were all retrieved from the house unharmed. New homes will now have to be found for them.

Three crews attended at the scene. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue manager Rick Selley said access for crews had been "difficult" because of the large amount of pet food being stored.
