A rainstorm pummelling the Chicago area has ripped open a sinkhole large enough to swallow three cars.
One driver was so badly injured he had to be taken to hospital. Chicago Police Department spokesman Mike Sullivan said the gaping hole opened up in a street on the city's South Side, near Lake Michigan.
