Drunken friends killed and butchered lamb in field to have a free roast dinner

Two friends killed and mutilated a lamb because they fancied a free roast dinner. Matthew Davidson, 28, and Kevin Sherratt, 33, grabbed the animal from a farm in Macclesfield, Cheshire, before beating it to death with a hammer.

They cut off two of its legs and head before fleeing the scene. The slaughter was captured in a series on photos including one where Davidson paraded the lamb’s head. But the drunken prank backfired when they sent the photos to a friend who alerted police.

Davidson, of Brocklehurst Avenue, Hurdsfield, Macclesfield, and Sherratt, of Kendal Road, Weston, Macclesfield, both admitted criminal damage and theft at the town’s magistrates court. Magistrates heard that police had wanted to charge the pair with animal cruelty but officers could not prove the animal suffered.

Trevor Feehily, defending the pair who are both unemployed, said the incident had been triggered by booze. He said: “It doesn’t excuse what either of them have done. Both said it was drunken and complete stupidity.” They will be sentenced on June 7.
