Woman arrested for trying to steal Bible

Police say a Powder Springs woman is facing charges after they say she attempted to steal a Bible from a bookstore on Friday.

Investigators say at around 1pm, Ashley Chacari Fleming tried to steal the Bible from the Barnes & Noble in Cobb County, Georgia. They say she left the store without paying for the holy book.

Fleming has been charged with theft by shoplifting, and was released on a $1,000 bond. Many churches and other groups routinely distribute Bibles.

"We believe that God's word should be given freely, and so if someone comes in to our campus and they don't have God's word, then we are very happy to give them a copy of God's word," said Roswell Street Baptist Church pastor Mark Scardino. The pastor said that his church gives away dozens of Bibles annually.
