Dutch joyriders aged seven and five cautioned after crashing their grandmother's car

Police in the Dutch town of Bloemendaal have cautioned two brothers aged seven and five after they crashed their grandmother's car while joyriding.

An officer saw the little boys standing unhurt beside the car with its doors open, and found the vehicle had been damaged after hitting a metal post. The older boy explained they had driven about 1.5km (one mile) and both had been wearing seat belts.

A police spokeswoman said the event in Bloemendaal was "quite remarkable". When approached by the patrol officer, the seven-year-old boy said: "At least I had my seat belt on! And my brother was in the child's seat."

"The boys were taken to the police station, given a talking-to and made aware of what they've done," police spokeswoman Lenny Beijerbergen said. "Then they were taken home. Thankfully they were both unhurt." She added: "I've never seen anything like it, seven is very young."
