It was an unhappy end to the life of a native Australian bird, living a long way from home.
On Wednesday, an emu named Ichabod escaped from the home of its owner in Tempe, Arizona.
Tempe police and workers from the Phoenix Zoo tried to corral the bird as it ran around the area.

The emu was tackled by zoo personnel but apparently succumbed to the heat. Tempe police spokesman Mike Pooley said the bird belonged to a private owner who had had Ichabod for 35 years.
