Motorist crashed into lagoon trying to avoid errant squirrel

Rather than squash a squirrel, a young man drove a BMW into Mission Bay, San Diego, on Saturday morning.

Lt. Nick Lerma of the San Diego Lifeguard Service said car, which carried two men in their late teens or early 20s, entered the bay at about 7:20am

“They said they were trying to avoid a squirrel in the road,” Lerma said.

Officer Scott Ellsworth of the San Diego Police Department said there was no evidence of alcohol involved in the crash. Neither driver nor passenger was injured. The squirrel’s fate is unknown.
