Neighbours living close to a portable toilet company say they are disgusted that loos are being cleaned in the street.
Residents of Wood Street in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, say that the firm's owner, Keith Tissington, has been hosing down the toilets in the road with water running into the drains on the street.
A neighbour said: "He cleans the toilets inside and out on the street and it is disgusting. I have had it spray on to my windows and the water running down was not clear.
"He cleans them with a power hose and the water just goes everywhere. People don't want to walk past when he is doing that. There are families with young children around here and it cannot be nice for them." Mr Tissington, who runs Derbyshire Loo Hire from his home in Wood Street, has about 100 portable toilets spread over two sites in Ilkeston. He initially denied cleaning the toilets on the street, saying: "I clean them on my property and the water runs into gullies on my property, not into the street."
However, when confronted with video of himself cleaning the toilets, he admitted that he had hosed them down on the highway. He said: "I have cleaned them on the road but they hadn't been used in years. They were not ones that had been used recently and they are only dusty. I sell these ones on rather than use them for events." A spokeswoman for the county council said: "We are aware of the issue and have written to Mr Tissington asking him to stop cleaning toilet units outside his property."
A spokeswoman for Severn Trent said: "We were contacted by Mr Tissington in August last year and he was given permission to dispose of small quantities of sewage from his portable toilet into our foul sewer. However, we were not aware that the way the customer was cleaning these toilets could potentially be causing an issue for local residents. We will be contacting Mr Tissington to remind him of the regulations surrounding the disposal of waste into our public sewers."The company said that it would also be discussing the incident with environmental health officers at the borough council.
