Firefighters rescued lady with bottom stuck in wall

A late night reveller perched between the pillars of a garden wall to rest her tired feet and got stuck. The worse-for-wear woman, in her 30s, was unable to escape from the stone structure in East Grinstead, West Sussex early on Saturday. Neighbours called police after hearing her screams for help.

Christopher Wheatley, whose wall was the subject of the unusual situation, said: “I understand a lady came down this road and at some point leant against our balustrade. She was obviously feeling a bit worse for wear, and she probably leant against it for support. Shortly afterwards, two guys who were also a bit worse for wear came down the road and found her. By that time, she had become stuck between the pillars.

“There was a discussion as to how she would get out, but it can’t have been very cohesive. Our neighbour could hear the discussions and got fed up with it, so he called the police.” Officers arrived at the scene shortly before crews from East Grinstead Fire Station, who managed to release the woman shortly afterwards. East Grinstead Fire Station crew manager Neil Mason insisted he and his colleagues “remained professional” when the call came in at about 1.30am on Saturday.

Crew manager Mason said: “The wall was made up of stone pillars, some of which were varied in shape and size. It appeared the woman sat down and slipped, and got her hips caught in the wall. We had a look at what was going to be the easiest way to release her. We tried to pull her out front ways, but it wasn’t working. In the end, we managed to get her to reverse back through the wall and through a gap. It’s the first call of that nature that any of us have been out to.” Crew manager Mason added that she “had probably had a couple of drinks.”
