Rugby streaker caused try to be disallowed

A streaker in Australia completed a naked 100-yard dash across Sydney’s Olympic stadium during the State of Origin decider, one of the country's most-watched sporting events, before asking “Am I in trouble now?”

Variously described as a "hero" and a "naked numbskull", Wati Holmwood, 33, doused himself in Vaseline and made his run during the climatic final moments of the annual New South Wales versus Queensland rugby league series, causing Queensland to have a try disallowed as he was judged to have impeded New South Wales players.

The generously-proportioned serial streaker – he made a similar run in 2011 - was crash-tackled by police and ground staff and covered with a blanket. He later told a reporter: “I’m sorry, I apologise about what happened. Am I in trouble now?... I don’t know what was going through my head."

Though he faces criminal charges and a lifetime ban from sporting events, Mr Holmwood has been described as a “legend” and a hero who “deserves a medal”. Others were less appreciative and described him as a "disgrace". He has been issued with a court attendance notice to appear in Burwood Local Court in August.
