“I've consulted with some friends and they haven't a clue either, and by the way – I haven't tasted them just in case!"

Not strange at all. They're potatoes, just growing in the wrong part of the plant. Also deadly poisonous -- potato plants are solanum (nightshade) family members.

Actually, they're potato fruit. Not potatoes (as in the tuber). And as noted by Ms. Green, quite poisonous. Rarely seen as the fruiting blossom often falls off before maturing.
