Motorist headbutted moving cars on Australian freeway

A man is being assessed in a West Australian hospital after headbutting several moving cars on a busy freeway. Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said it happened on Monday night after the man crashed his Mazda ute into an unattended Volkswagen which was parked in the emergency lane of the Kwinana Freeway near Canning Bridge just after 7pm.

Witnesses reported the man then got out of his car and ran into the oncoming traffic, jumping on the bonnets of some cars and throwing himself head first into the windows of others. Motorist Jordan captured the dramatic images on his dashcam. "It was at about 7pm, I was heading down to Freeway South and all the traffic just stopped," he said.

"It was like the movie World War Z, where the zombies just run into cars, he was exactly like that and I thought 'oh shit, it's the zombie apocalypse'. He was just running into cars, jumping on top of cars, he was obviously trying to hurt himself. I kept driving and I went past about four cars that had pulled over...he was just going crazy."

Windscreens and windows of several cars were damaged, forcing traffic to stop and causing a major backlog on one of the city's main highways. A police spokeswoman said inquiries are continuing, and the man, who is believed to have mental health issues, was being assessed at Fremantle hospital. Officers were also investigating whether alcohol and drugs were involved.
