Pervian fist-fight festival sees mass Christmas punch up

Hundreds of people got violent in the annual Fighting Festival in the town of San Juan de Lurigancho outside Lima on Wednesday.

The Christmas Day festival, known as Takanakuy, originates from Chumbivilcas community in the Andes when disgruntled neighbours physically fight out any grievances from the previous year.

At the end, they put the problems aside as resolved and begin the new year fresh and unencumbered.

The tradition is kept alive in the capital too where women and even children take part in the fighting event.

Sounds a bit like Festivus. It combines the "Airing of Grievances" with the "Feats of Strength"!
