Woman accused of leaving emaciated horse with swollen penis to suffer

A woman has been accused of leaving an emaciated horse with a swollen penis to suffer.

Susan Savage, of Benenden, Kent was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a chestnut colt by failing to get it veterinary help. Savage, 51, is said to have left the animal, underweight and suffering from paraphimosis – a swollen penis – for 29 days.

Witnesses reported the colt's condition to the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare after spotting it at Standen Farm, Biddenden. Savage appeared at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court on Tuesday when her lawyer Richard Atkins claimed "there was no neglect".

"The poor, unfortunate foal succumbed in a very short period of time and in circumstances, which led the RSPCA to destroy the animal," he said. The hearing was for case management, before a three-day trial from May 13 to 15 and Mr Atkins said there were "a lot of background issues".
