Peanut crowned World's Ugliest Dog

A 2-year-old dog from Greenville, North Carolina, has been crowned the "World's Ugliest Dog."

"Peanut" beat 24 other dogs to win the contest on Friday at a competition in Petaluma, California. The competition featured a voting round, in which Peanut received 1,795 votes, more than twice the votes the second-place dog received.

He was ultimately selected the winner by a panel of judges. Peanut is a rescue dog owned by Holly Chandler. Before Chandler rescued him, Peanut had been found abandoned and severely burned. People at the shelter say he was likely set on fire.

This burned off his eyelids, his lips, and a good portion of hair on his body. Peanut is healthy now, but Chandler says some people have trouble accepting him. She hopes Peanut's victory will help raise awareness about animal abuse. "We're trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused," she said.
