Full crew of firefighters rushed to rescue kitten found in car engine

After failed attempts to rescue a kitten, believed to be between eight and 12 weeks old, discovered by friends Sam Warrington and Lisa Merry in their car, they called the fire service and a full crew arrived. It took half an hour to safely rescue the creature in a mission involving lifting up the car with airbags.

Miss Warrington, from Aylsham in Norfolk, is now temporarily looking after the kitten which was not injured but came out very dirty. She said: “I had finished helping Lisa clean her holiday cottage in Cley. When we came out we heard this meowing but couldn’t work out where it was coming from. We looked in the bins and in the trees. A car pulled up and a man said it was coming from the car.”

The kitten was trapped in the tray of the engine and the rescue in the Picnic Fayre deli car park attracted a large crowd. Miss Warrington added: “The firemen were very good. They kept the kitten quite calm. It was quite distressed when it was rescued but once everyone had left it calmed down and happily sat in its box.” It is not known if the young animal is male or female or if it is a feral or domestic cat because it does not have any identification.

“It is becoming more settled down now. I have taken on the cat for now until we find the owner but I’m considering keeping it because my two-year-old daughter has been asking me for a cat for ages,” Miss Warrington said. Sarah Whittley, co-owner of the Cley Pinkfoot Gallery, who helped with the rescue, described the kitten as “incredibly cute”. It is not known where the animal got into the engine as Miss Warrington and Miss Merry had been to High Kelling and Aylsham earlier that day.

This kitten is female. Three-coloured calicos always are. (Also, Blogger commenting is vile.)
