German rabbit breeders criticize Pope's sex comments

The Association of German Rabbit Breeders (ZDRK) said on Tuesday that Pope Francis' injunction to Catholics not to breed "like rabbits" was inaccurate. "He should really think harder about giving up expressions like that and allow people to use contraception instead," ZDRK president Erwin Leowsky said.

"I think it would be much more appropriate than saying such stupid things". Leowsky added that not all rabbits had a high level of sexual activity, and that the stereotype mostly applied to rabbits living in the wild.

Most rabbits bred in captivity have a well-regulated reproductive rate, he said. Pope Francis made his remarks on the way home from a visit to the Philippines, a stronghold of the Catholic Church in Asia which last year passed a family planning law in defiance of the Vatican's 1968-vintage ban on contraception.

"God gave us the means to be responsible", he told journalists on the flight home. "Some people think that - excuse my expression here - that in order to be good Catholics we have to breed like rabbits." Following the Church's teachings did not mean "Christians should have children one after the other", he said.

Don't know which made me cringe and laugh more, the pope's flippant comment on a serious subject or the rabbit breeder's defensive response to his promotion of rabbit stereotyping. It's like a Monty Python skit.

Those poor rabbits! They must be losing sleep over the shame!

I have a direct report of a friend of mine who got rid of his rabbit after he found said rabbit diddling his cat.

So, the reputation of rabbits for having an, um, "overcharged" sexuality may be justified.

Wait, rabbits are thought to be monogamous but the Church disapproves of divorce... Can't have your host and eat it too, or can you?

So to recap... rabbit "breeder" insists HIS rabbits don't do much breeding, only wild rabbits breed excessively. So perhaps Rabbit Breeder is not an essential role?

We had a rabbit as kids, a male, and someone gave us a second bunny, also male. Second one WOULD NOT STOP raping the first, day in day out. Children traumatised, parents in urgent bunny removal industry.

Go, Popey, I've little time for your predecessors but as a world leader you're doing it right.

Kind of funny that people miss the point of this. The man may be a rabbit breeder, but his comment about rabbits wasn't the significant part of his argument. He was merely using his position as a rabbit breeder to comment on the roman catholic church's ridiculous and indefensible position on contraception.

Remember it's only a few years since they told their followers it was OK to enjoy sex.

Rabbits had a reputation for being fast breeders before the pope, so they should be mad at whoever made that up, not the pope.
