They do make it over, they make it over surprisingly well. My mother used to refer to my beast as houdini as it'd invariably be able to work its way out. I watched it one day push against the cage from one end to the other until it found a loose bit and escaped through it. I put it back in the cage and started to go get something to secure that point, only to watch it make a bee-line straight to the loose bit again, it remembered where the weak point was.
