Armed police called to deal with man carrying a suspicious sandwich at railway station

Armed police were called to Stevenage railway station in Hertfordshire at around 4.40pm on Thursday afternoon after someone reported they thought they had seen a man with a gun.

Police were immediately dispatched to the station where they located the man. They then discovered he was carrying nothing more threatening than his lunch. He was searched and found to be in possession of a sandwich.

British Transport Police also attended and some trains were delayed. A police spokesman said: "The man was quickly located and searched by officers who found everything to be in order and the suspicious item was a sandwich inside a carrier bag.

"Whilst this may sound light-hearted, our thanks go to the vigilant member of the public who, concerned by what they saw, had the sense to ring the police who could take swift action. We would urge anyone else who is suspicious or concerned about anything they see or hear to do the same thing and contact us."
