Panic and pandemonium ensued as two tonnes of illegal fireworks accidentally exploded

Peruvian authorities and journalists were sent scrambling on Thursday when nearly two tonnes of illegal fireworks accidentally exploded.



Authorities had called journalists to cover the destruction of confiscated fireworks that were destined for Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.



Without warning, the stockpile of fireworks suddenly burst to life, apparently set off by a spark.

People sprinted from the pyrotechnics as they exploded with thunderous cracks, sending luminous plumes into the air. There were no reports of serious injury.
