Police were called to a construction site in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, at about 6.45am on Tuesday.
They found a 20-year-old man swinging on a chain that stretched from the main body of a 12-storey construction crane to its arm.
Wollongong duty officer Dan Richardson said the man wore no safety harness and police were fearful he would fall.
“He wouldn’t have survived a fall,” he said. “After a short period of negotiation he climbed down of his own volition.”
It took 20 minutes for the man to come down. The man appeared disorientated. He was arrested and issued a field court attendance notice for trespass offences, then taken to Wollongong Hospital for medical assessment.
