Cycle lane that runs straight into a lamppost criticised

Manchester is currently attempting to reinvent itself as a cycle-friendly city. However, cyclists have criticised a new bike lane on Corporation Street because it runs straight into a lamppost.

They claim the lane is also a danger to pedestrians because it runs on a pavement and is close to a bus stop. Greater Manchester Cycling Campaign’s Nick Hubble said it was ridiculous planning by bosses at Transport for Greater Manchester.



He said: “This is another example of failed cycling infrastructure in Manchester city centre for a number of reasons. First, we shouldn’t be encouraging people to cycle on pavements. There should be dedicated and identifiable space for people to cycle. Not merely a painted line on the pavement, or indeed, on a busy road.

“And second, placing a painted cycle lane in such close proximity to the post, a patent hazard, is ridiculous.” Councillor Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said: “Compromise will be required in certain situations and we would expect cyclists to be aware of their surroundings, including street furniture.”
