Two men arrested following 'hang all peodo’s' railway bridge protest

Two men are in police custody after a stand-off on a Metro bridge in Byker, Tyne and Wear, led to services being suspended across Newcastle.

The viaduct was closed at around 8am on Wednesday after two topless men climbed the bridge and draped a banner over the edge which stated 'HANG ALL PEODO'S'.

A train on the bridge had to perform an emergency stop due to the arrival of the men and was returned to Byker station. Family and friends were seen on an adjacent footbridge trying to appeal to the men to come down before police negotiators arrived.

The negotiators remained in lengthy discussions with the two men until 11.35am when they were eventually talked down and arrested. A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Two men have been arrested and remain in police custody.” It is not yet known why the men climbed onto the bridge and whether any criminal charges will be brought against them.
