Brazilian race pilot plunges into Australian river

An air race pilot has escaped virtually unhurt after crashing into a river at high speed during practice. Brazilian Adilson Kindlemann lost control at low level over the Swan River in Perth, Australia.

Red Bull race series chief executive Bernd Loidl said Kindlemann was approaching the third gate in the middle of the race track when the crash happened. "Kindlemann impacted the water with his wings level and tail first," he said.

"I am pleased to confirm that Kindlemann is in good health having only suffered minor injuries. As a precautionary measure, he will be held in the Royal Perth Hospital overnight."

Eyewitnesses told police they saw the wing of Kindlemann's plane hit the water. "He appeared to be coming out of a turn, he was quite low to the water and it was like his wing just clipped something and he dropped straight in," said Marianne Cashim. "He was in the water for only a few minutes, they pulled him out very quickly."

The race, which is held at various locations around the world, features competitors who fly planes at speeds of up to 250mph through inflatable pylons on mostly water courses.
